Can My Euphorbia Once Again Grow Leaves Again?

What’s the Problem?

The Euphorbia ritchiei grew a leaf, but it was unintentionally knocked off and currently it stands leafless. Will it sprout again?

Understanding the Situation

Please don’t panic, the African native succulent is unusual in that it develops thick leaves along its ridged stems during its active phase, then often loses them during colder months. Originating from Kenya, precipitation is periodic. The plant adapts by producing foliage during rains, then shedding its leaves in the dry season to preserve moisture and resources. Its photosynthetic stems are able to produce energy so the plant can thrive without foliage for extended durations.

Recommended Care

For promoting new leaves, it requires intense, bright light; place it in the sunniest indoor spot you have, like a sun-drenched windowsill, or supplement with a grow light. Heat will also stimulate foliage development, so keep it in a consistently warm room. Once the potting mix is fully dry, drench deeply until you see water drain through the bottom openings. Carry this out in spring and summer when the plant is actively growing. During dormancy, cut back on watering, as that marks its natural rest period. A diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season will help support healthy foliage.

Prevention

Learn this plant’s natural rhythm; bare during cool months, foliage-rich in warmth. Avoid the temptation to water excessively when it’s dormant, as it may damage the root system. Treat it as a seasonal cycle, with the return of sunlight and heat as seasons change, your euphorbia will likely sprout leaves once more.
