Wellness Escapes and Coastal Adventures on Scandinavia’s Serene Wellness Island

Were you to visit the small island of this peaceful retreat in the West Sweden coastal region during the turn of the 20th century, it's likely you came for a treatment for lung disease. Back then, the isle welcomed city dwellers in search of ocean air, saltwater dips, and tranquility. Thanks to the legacy of a well-known local doctor, multiple sanatoriums gained such a excellent reputation that the island grew into a wellness destination. While those peak years are long gone, a recently opened holistic hotel aims to restore that restorative atmosphere.

A Sanctuary of Peace and Fresh Breezes

The exact qualities that first attracted health seekers to Styrsö persist still. Nestled and protected from harsh winds, the southern coast receives sunlight from first light to evening. There’s no smog here. It is such a calm place – guests can genuinely relax and recharge your batteries,” remarked the hotel manager during a our visit. “As soon as you board the ferry, your breathing drops and you start breathing in the clean air.”

An Adventure of Slow Travel

Adopting the ethos of taking it easy, we journeyed by train from the UK using European rail passes, stopping for the night in Hamburg. Getting to Gothenburg in the golden hour, we explored the old town before hopping on a tram to Saltholmen harbour and a quick catamaran ferry. Under an hour, we went from urban heart to island hotel.

Situated on the coast with stunning views of nearby Donsö island, the 10-suite hotel is a elegant structure designed in cool Nordic tones, complete with a light-filled restaurant, relaxation section, and heated pool. Our suite – part of the ocean-facing options – was roomy, clean-lined, and boasted a terrace.

Sustainability and Local Focus

This property is built with sustainability in mind – using ground-source heat pumps and liquid underfloor heating. It’s also working toward Green Key status. Each detail is sourced from regional suppliers, from the team and culinary components to the marine plants and salt used in the spa treatments.

The wellness center is divided into two areas. The first section offers soaking tubs, beauty services, and a rest space. The other section houses a sauna, steam bath, and cold dip. Additionally, there is a small gym. Therapeutic treatments are in development for the coming months.

Culinary offerings highlight local seafood dishes such as scallops, plaice, and wholesome vegan options.

Discovering the Tranquil Island

Cycling, strolling, coastal plunges, and dining are integral parts of the island stay. We were given well-maintained two-wheelers to explore the compact island, which is almost vehicle-restricted. Throughout three days, the sole vehicles we saw on the well-paved roads were bikes, golf carts, and three-wheeled mopeds that resembled motorized wheelbarrows.

On a sunny day, after stocking up at the community market, we pedaled to a nearby outcrop connected by a wooden bridge for a picnic lunch experience. Later on, we still had space for fika – savouring hot drinks with a cinnamon bun and a classic chocolate ball at a cozy spot that was formerly owned by a local businessperson.

Woodland Hikes and Coastal Dining

Hiking excursions on the tree-covered south end of the island included a breathtaking evening hike along a pathway leading to a ancient stone pile at the highest point, which provides a 360-degree outlook across the coastal islands. Returning in the night, we shared the path with dozens of tiny frogs, some no exceeding a fingernail. They likely became meals for the herons we spotted while exploring.

Back at the hotel, we enjoyed dinner in the spacious restaurant facing the water. The menu features Nordic-inspired seafood dishes such as cured halibut, hake, and wholesome vegan options using fresh vegetables. We indulged in starters of chanterelle and foraged goods, followed by toasted hazelnuts over a creamy potato base – each was flavorful.

We slipped into wetsuits and entered the transparent, surprisingly warm seawater, learning from Karolina responsibly gather sea plants.

Spa Experiences

After dinner, we experienced the spa. Malin handed us a range of pleasant-smelling balms made by hand, and we enjoyed the hydrotherapy, sauna, and cold pool. Following that, we unwinded in the heated pool with vistas of the ocean and the shimmering lights of Donsö.

Neighbouring Visit and Coastal Cafés

A connection has connected Styrsö with adjacent Donsö for over 50 years, so we biked across to enjoy an al fresco lunch at a harbourside café operated by local sisters. Their offerings include items cultivated by friends, tasty bread and cakes prepared by family, and live music. Afterward, we came back to the harbour for a superb dinner featuring jerusalem artichokes, pumpkin, and a vegetable purée at a repurposed ice store that now operates as a eatery.

Marine Foraging and Outdoor Cooking

Our final day was dedicated to a marine foraging tour experience with a expert who once worked as a potter. We commenced with a scenic bike ride of the resident zone of the island, home to the majority of the 1,600 inhabitants. Our guide guided us unhurriedly up and down gentle hills dotted with charming wooden houses, each distinct.
