Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
